Jimmy Carter defeated President Gerald Ford, winning 297 electoral votes to Ford’s 240 and just over half the popular vote. Ford carried states worth 241 electoral votes, but one Washington elector voted for Ronald Reagan.
Four years after Democrats had carried only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia, Carter rebuilt a coalition of Southern states and Northern industrial centers. The former Georgia governor won every former Confederate state except Virginia, while taking New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio from the Republican column.
Ohio was crucial: Carter won it by just 11,116 votes. His narrow victory in Wisconsin also mattered. Had Ford flipped those two states, he would have won the presidency. Ford held California, Illinois and his home state of Michigan, keeping the race close despite the damage Watergate had done to Republicans.
Carter’s promise of honest government fit the moment, while Ford remained burdened by his pardon of Nixon and a troubled economy. Ford erased much of Carter’s early lead but fell short. The result briefly restored the Democrats’ old alliance between the South and the industrial North — a coalition that would unravel in the next election.
